There’s a great flow and feel to your character’s movement thanks to small touches like how each sword swing gives you a slight boost of momentum, or how you can cancel out of any roll, and the way each kill gives a satisfying screen-shake and pause to the action (both of which can be adjusted or disabled in the options). Your character can slash in eight directions, slow down time, use a dodge roll to avoid bullets, or reflect bullets back with his sword. Like Hotline Miami, it’s one shot, one kill for both you and any enemy that isn’t a boss. Working up to that moment is a blast because Katana Zero’s action is fast-paced and empoweringly flexible. Every level even ends with a security camera recording of what “actually” happened, which serves not only as a way to see your moment of triumph played back, but also to subvert expectations in interesting ways later on. So, instead of your character dying, you’re told “No… That won’t work,” as your precognition rewinds to the start (complete with old-timey VCR effect), giving you a chance to find a solution that doesn’t end in your death. In an extremely clever and fun framing of the action, every level is contextualized as being the planning of an assassination. This isn't a good hard mode.Katana Zero puts you in control of a nameless samurai assassin with the power to manipulate time and see into the future. I can do speedrun mode and get the game done in under 50 minutes with about 200 deaths max.

Personally if Hard Mode had faster time slow regen it'd be a bit better, but I'm running a 6 HOUR HARD MODE RUN right now with +1K Deaths. I dont care anymore, I just want the dumb achievement so I can never come back to hard mode, his 2nd phase just rapid fire spams clone orbs, I genuinely dread the 3rd and final phase. Fighting psych in hard mode right now and honestly it's my breaking point. I really adore HLM2 and I may have S Ranked the base and hard game but I genuinely think it lacked some serious depth. Hotline's hardmode was mostly just more of the same enemies. And we get the LMG enemies on top of that. What i think Katana Zero's hard mode does better than Hotline's is the introduction of new enemies, in KZ's hard mode we are introduced to red melee artists that can counter roll-spam. Kissyface's fight was the same, except he had more health. I agree on the boss fight front, the final boss (not 15 btw, the one in the soldier outfit is the Headhunter) felt like it was just throwing extra enemies at you rather than making the boss itself more difficult, although that kinda happens in the *final* fight.
